Key functions of saliva
- Lubricates oral tissues and supports speaking and swallowing.
- Helps wash food particles and dissolved substances from the mouth.
- Buffers acids through bicarbonate and other components.
- Supplies calcium and phosphate involved in tooth-mineral equilibrium.
- Contains proteins and immune-related components that interact with microbes.
Saliva and tooth mineral balance
After acidic challenges, saliva contributes to raising pH and supplies minerals relevant to remineralization. That protective system is one reason frequent sugar or acid exposure can be particularly harmful when saliva flow is reduced.
This does not mean saliva can reverse every cavity. Established decay may require professional dental treatment.
What happens when saliva is reduced
Dry mouth can increase difficulty eating and speaking and is associated with greater risk of tooth decay, oral infections and discomfort. Many medications can reduce saliva, as can certain medical conditions and treatments.
Persistent dry mouth deserves evaluation because simply drinking more water does not address every cause.
Ways to support oral comfort
Hydration, sugar-free gum or lozenges where appropriate, avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol can help some people. Dental professionals can recommend saliva substitutes, fluoride strategies or prescription options depending on the cause and decay risk.
A probiotic supplement should not be marketed as a substitute for diagnosing or managing clinically significant dry mouth.
